and Stephanie Groves riding ‘Aragon’, Fernances Creek Haflingers Modern Haflingers In recent times, an effort has been made to refine Haflingers true to the original type of nimble, sure-footed mountain pony, whilst retaining the excellent temperaments of those horses that lived and served with soldiers so faithfully through the war.
A modern Haflinger is somewhat taller and more finely built than it was 70 years ago.
These changes have allowed the Haflinger to become more athletic, and extend the number of disciplines that a Haflinger can undertake with success. The Haflinger breed is regarded as a national treasure in Austria, and the Austrian Government are particular about the ongoing successful continuity and purity of the Haflinger breed.
Therefore there are strict regulations involved in the breeding of pure-bred Haflingers all over the world. Classification Haflingers bred in NSW now owned by Golden West Haflinger Stud, WA.

All pure-bred Haflingers must be registered as soon as they are born, and classified after 3 years of age.
They are encouraged to be between 140cm and 150cm tall.
Apart from good conformation, there are certain traits that a Haflinger needs to have to pass classification and be included in the studbook. • A Haflinger must be of a calm, quiet and intelligent disposition.
Colours from light chestnut to dark liver chestnut with white mane and tail are acceptable.
Impurities of colour such as roaning dark smudges, or white markings larger than a tennis ball are judged undesirable and negative up to the point of exclusion.
Colour impurities of the mane and tail of more than 10% black, grey or red hues will also be judged negative up to the point of exclusion.
White socks above the hock will result in disqualification.
A colt must score 80% or above to be eligible to breed in Australia, and mares are graded according to their score as to determine the better ones for a breeding program.
