Charles Wilhelm’s Ultimate Super Horse Challenge TM June 7-9, 2013 – Western State’s Horse Expo S – Supple U – Ultimate Versatility P – Pleasure E – Equitation R – Responsive WHAT IS CHARLES WILHELM’S ULTIMATE SUPER HORSE CHALLENGE? The Ultimate Super Horse Challenge is a timed and judged event ridden through 3 different events created to test the communication between horse and rider, as well as the competitor’s horsemanship and riding skills at the walk, trot and canter.

The competition will be suitable for riders of any discipline and horses of all breeds.

As the horse and rider work through each event they will be judged on several criteria as well as overall performance.

The judges for this year’s competition will be announced at the contestants’s meeting on Thursday, June 6th.

Contestants will compete for prizes and the title of 2013 Ultimate Super Horse.

THE ULTIMATE SUPER HORSE CHALLENGE AT Western States Horse Expo The Ultimate Super Horse Challenge elimination rounds will take place on Friday and Saturday, with the finals on Sunday, at the arena at the Western States Horse Expo in Sacramento at the Cal Expo fair grounds.

A maximum of 15 horse/rider teams and a minimum of 10, will participate in the competition.

The top 5 horse and rider teams will advance to the Finals on Sunday, June 9, 2013.

THE COMPETITION The events will feature numerous trail obstacles and riding challenges.

The courses will include obstacles and activities such as: jumping, backing through a pattern, roll backs, gates, flags, balls and pedestals, up & down transitions, cow/mechanical cow work, all at a walk, trot and canter to demonstrate the lightness and finesse of the horse and rider.

JUDGING The Ultimate Super Horse Challenge will consist of 3 judged and timed events during which the performance of each horse and rider team will be judged for quality of horsemanship.

For each event, the judge will award performance points based on the horse’s attitude, body condition, the rider’s horsemanship, and the overall performance.

Horses and riders will be required to complete the entire event in order to receive points.

If an obstacle is not completed or the rider goes off course, the contestant will lose additional points.

The horse and rider team with the highest overall point score will win that event.

Contestants will be eliminated after each qualifying event, with 5 competing in the Finals.

PRIZES Prizes will be awarded to the top three contestants.

The first place team will receive a Charles Wilhelm saddle and the title of “Ultimate Super Horse Challenge 2013 Champion”; the winners of each daily event, will also be awarded a prize.

All prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the final phase of the competition on Sunday.

HOW DO I APPLY? The Ultimate Super Horse Challenge will be open to riders age 18 and over and horses of all breeds.

All riders and horses will compete against each other; there will be no age or gender divisions.

Interested riders may apply to compete by completing an entry form available in the online store at www.CharlesWilhelm.com.

To be considered to ride in the competition you must submit your completed application along with a 2-3 minute video posted to the Charles Wilhelm Training facebook page, showing you riding your horse.

You will be notified by email if you are accepted and then signed rules will be due by mail, no later than May 25, 2013.The Non-refundable entry fee for each horse/rider team is $250 (made payable to Charles Wilhelm Training) Individual riders may not compete with more than one horse.

Late entries will be accepted at the door, if there is room in the competition and available stalls.

STABLING One horse stall will be available through Western States Horse Expo and the cost is included in your entry fee.

The stall will be available for use beginning Thursday, June 6th, and must be vacated by Sunday, June 9th, contact the Western States Horse Expo (530-672-7490) for special arrangements.

Participants are responsible for bringing or purchasing their own feed and bedding.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT COMPETING IN THE ULTIMATE SUPER HORSE CHALLENGE: 1.

Contestants must check in with Charles Wilhelm training by noon on June 6th.

A Contestants Meeting will be conducted on Thursday afternoon where contestants will receive a copy of the courses for the qualifying round and the participant “Order of Go”. 2.

The Ultimate Super Horse Challenge will offer a unique and exciting opportunity to test your horsemanship and compete for prizes.

Please be aware that the competition will be conducted in a large arena where there are likely to be large crowds in attendance. 3.

All horses brought to the challenge must be free of illness and infectious disease. • Any horse transported to the event across state lines, must be accompanied by a negative test result for horse infectious anemia (Coggins Test) dated within one year of the event. • Any horse transported to the event must be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (health papers) issued within 30 days of the date on which the horse arrives at the event.

The certificate must state that these horses do not originate from a quarantined area, or an area where a contagious or infectious disease has been officially diagnosed. • All horses must be vaccinated for rabies, tetanus, EEE/WEE, and Flu/Rhino within 6 months of the event.

Each horse owner is required to present the mandatory health papers upon check in. 4.

It will be the responsibility of each contestant to monitor the progress of the events and be at the entrance of the arena by the time the contestant that is listed two riders higher on the Order of Go enters the arena.

For their safety, all contestants are encouraged to wear approved riding helmets.

Working Trail/Agility – to include trot poles, sidepass, up and down transitions, gate and bridges, Pleasure Equitation – All gaits, including extended trot and canter and hand gallop, with emphasis on lightness, responsiveness and soft transitions. 2. “Dancing with Cows” and working pattern 3.

Super Horse Grand Finale- to include flag run, dragging and crossing a large tarp, pedestal, balls and jumps and more. RULES AND JUDGING 1.

The Ultimate Super Horse Challenge will be a timed event during which the performance of each horse and rider team will be judged on each obstacle for quality of horsemanship.

The entire course must be completed in the specified amount of time.

For each obstacle, the judge will award performance points on a scale of 0–5 based on the horse’s attitude, the rider’s horsemanship, and the team’s overall performance. 0 = Obstacle not completed 4 = Very good/above average performance 1 = Very poor performance 5 = Excellent/outstanding performance 2 = Poor performance Horsemanship Score 1 – 5 3 = Good/average performance Equitation Score 1-5 The judges will be looking for relaxed gaits at the walk, trot and canter, soft upward and downward transitions, including a relaxed hand gallop on a soft rein.

The horse should show balance, rhythm and collection in all gaits and go on a soft rein.

Contestants should have soft stops and back-ups, and the horse should look willing and obedient.

Gapping mouths, head in the air, unbalanced, on the forehand, unhappy expressions, will all be counted against the contestant. 2.

Contestants will be required to complete each obstacle in order to receive points for the obstacle.

If an obstacle is not completed the contestant will be flagged/whistled and must move on to the next obstacle. 3.

Each contestant must complete the entire course within a specified amount of time in a relaxed and forward manner (to be determined based on the number of obstacles in the course).

Any contestant who fails to meet this time limit will lose additional points.

This time limit will be announced at the contestant meeting prior to the competition and will also be listed in the materials each contestant will receive upon check-in on Thursday. 4.

Any contestant who falls off of his/her horse will be disqualified, will not be permitted to remount, will be excused from the arena and will receive a score of 0. 5.

Obstacles and competition rules will be reviewed in a contestant meeting before the challenge begins.

It is the responsibility of the contestant to fully understand the rules of the competition before the it begins.

Contestants will be permitted to ask questions about the rules up until the first contestant enters the course.

Due to time restraints, there will be no “walk through” or course practice.

No one will be permitted on the course prior to the competition. 6.

The course is subject to change at the discretion of Charles Wilhelm’s Ultimate Super Horse Challenge up until the time that the first competitor enters the ring.

Any changes in the course will be posted at the Charles Wilhelm Booth; it will be the contestant’s responsibility to check for any course changes. 7.

The crowd at the event is considered to be part of the course, and each contestant acknowledges that the crowd may be a distraction to his/her horse. 8.

At the judge’s discretion a contestant may be issued a re-ride should an outside distraction from beyond the course (such as a medical emergency, etc.) be so great as to inhibit the contestant from having a fair opportunity to compete.

If a re-ride is issued, the contestant will receive the re-ride at the end of the days competition. 9.

Each contestant must make an effort to complete each obstacle in the course; contestants may not choose to skip an obstacle.

All obstacles must be accomplished in the order set forth in the course summary.

Should a contestant veer off course or miss an obstacle, he/she will receive a zero for that obstacle.

Neither the judge nor anyone on the competition crew will alert the contestant that an obstacle has been missed. 10.

Contestants may utilize any English or western tack (see attached rules) that is considered to be standard in the industry and in recognized competitions.

Any bit, spur, or other piece of equipment deemed to be severe or inappropriate by the judge will not be allowed.

The judge will evaluate the tack on the horse when it enters the arena.

Mechanical hackamores, gag bits, tie downs, etc.

Will not be permitted.

For their safety, riders are encouraged to wear approved riding helmets.

Riders should be neatly dressed in discipline appropriate attire.

Horses should be well groomed and turned out in clean, discipline appropriate tack.

Horses are permitted to wear protective leg wraps, boots, or other leg gear. 11.

All contestants will compete in the order in which their names are drawn; failure to compete in this order will result in disqualification. 12.

Neither horse nor rider may be substituted for any reason during the competition.

If a contestant’s horse is injured after the qualifying round and before the Finals, the contestant must withdraw from the competition.

If a contestant withdraws from the Finals, the contestant that placed next in the qualifying round will be given the opportunity to advance to the Finals. 13.

Any dispute or complaint by a contestant must be brought to the attention of the head judge prior to the contestant leaving the course arena.

All contestants agree to abide by the rulings of the judge/s; the decisions of the judge will be final and not subject to appeal for any reason. 14.

The head judge and/or the management of Ultimate Super Horse Challenge may disqualify a contestant for abuse of any animal or violation of any contest rule.

No drugs may be administered to any contestant’s horse to enhance the horse’s ability to navigate the course.

The administration of drugs (other than those prescribed by a veterinarian for treatment of a specific condition) will be grounds for disqualification. 15.

The ride time calculated by the official timer for the competition will be deemed the official time for each contestant’s ride and may not be challenged by any contestant.

The timer’s records are final and may not be challenged in any way by the contestant.

Should timers fail; the contestant will receive a re-ride at the end of all competitors for that day. 16.

The protocol for awarding points for ride times in the Finals will be determined by the judge and management the Ultimate Super Horse Challenge prior to the Finals and will be communicated to all contestants at the same time that the course for the Finals is reviewed. 17.

The points from each obstacle will be totaled.

The 5 horse and rider teams with the highest overall point scores from the qualifying rounds will advance to the Finals.

The Finals will take place on Sunday, June 9 . 19.

All contestants who advance to the Finals will begin with a score of zero.

No scores from the qualifying round will be carried over to the Finals.

The horse and rider team with the highest overall point score in the Finals will be the 2013 Ultimate Super Horse Challenge Champion. 20.

In the event of a tie for first, second, third, or fourth place, the scores for a certain number of pre-selected obstacles will be combined, and the contestants with tied scores will be placed according to their combined scores for these obstacles.

The obstacles that will be used to break a tie will be announced at the contestant meeting prior to the race.

The obstacles will also be noted on the course map and summary that each contestant will receive at check-in at the Barn Office. I have read the Ultimate Super Horse Challenge Rules listed above and agree to comply with these Rules.

I understand that if I fail to comply with these Rules, the judge and/or the staff may withdraw me from the Ultimate Super Horse Challenge, and I will forfeit all entry fees.
