Our “Using Horse” workshops are intended to provide an entertaining yet educational experience for horses and riders coming from any discipline.
The back yard and trail horse will be ready to tackle the more challenging Ranch and Trail Encounter obstacles.
Horses and riders competing in Pleasure classes, Dressage, jumpers or reiners will have a head start in Ranch Riding.
EVERY HORSE will benefit immensely from the Cattle Working Games we play.
Think of this as a vacation for your horse.
Watch your mount develop confidence and a sense of “self” that is gained from moving cattle. Offering something for every Horse and Rider You and your horse will never feel out of place.
The “Using Horse” program has levels of participation that are right for you.
You might be ready to go right into Level 3, or you might be working your way up, regardless, you will find a lot to learn all along the way.
Whenever possible a clinician is provided at our workshops to help us develop specific skills.
Level 1 Basic Skills such as, standing steady when mounting, introduction to gates and trail obstacles, low jumps at the trot, picking up and carrying light objects, introduction to the rope, ground tying, taking the correct lead and smooth gait transitions, collected stops, and no-stress introduction to cattle. The “Using Horse” Workshop Is fun and informal.
Most workshops have time for all three areas of focus.
Ranch and Trail Encounters, provides the horse and rider with experience carrying objects, negotiating obstacles and learning to perform a variety of tasks.
Ranch Riding, helps the horse and rider to travel at speeds appropriate for any job, to stop and to change direction.
Cattle Working, well, maybe we should call it cattle games! This is the frosting on the cake.
We play games that provide fun and excitement for the rider AND horse while developing confidence in the horse.
The horses love this! Level 2 Intermediate Skills such as; opening and closing gates, more difficult trail obstacles, low jumps at the trot or lope, dragging objects, independent movement of the front and back of the horse, moving freely in all gaits, loping circles and figure 8’s, solid stops.
Cattle games such as Team Sorting and Cow Catch develop assertiveness of the horse. Level 3 and Beyond Will provide more advanced challenges on the trail course, dragging heavy objects on the rope, circles at the lope and gallop, flying lead changes, roll-backs, lope departures and good stops.
Cattle work will include cutting and penning as would be performed on a working ranch, with the emphasis of low stress to the cattle. Overcoming scary situations is a big part of the program. Cattle work is fun & comes naturally to most horses!
