o f Course 19 HORSES Y In the City es, you can get ‘up close and personal with horses in the city”.
Adelaide has always been a ‘City of Horses” .
Did you know the first trams in Adelaide were horse drawn? The unique SA Police Greys, a South Australian icon, started their breeding program in1840.
Greys were favoured for their visibility at night, and by 1975 the program consisted of 98 horses.
They still rouse an audience on city streets, as does Mike Keogh as he parks a team of Clydesdales outside a city pub on Friday rounds.
Take a stroll in the North Adelaide parklands or Breakout Creek at Lockleys on a Sunday morning and chat to owners busily attending to horses.
Photograph racehorses on Henley Beach in the mornings, speculate on a yearling at the Magic Millions sales or have a flutter one Saturday at Morphettville.
See Parade Horses in the city on Anzac Day, Australia Day and the Earth Ride.
Horse drawn wedding carriages with beautiful brides on the banks of the Torrens.
Watch elite level sports horses vie for places on Olympic teams in the Australian International Three Day Event in the Parklands each November and admire the Champions at the ten-day Royal Adelaide Show which starts on the first Friday of September each year.
Dress up, pack a picnic and watch all the excitement and speed of “Polo in the City” and the glamour of the fashions at North Adelaide in December each year for free, or treat yourself to a day of gourmet food & champagne in a private marquee.
Have you considered becoming a volunteer at a metropolitan based pony or riding club, steward at the pony trots or help with the horses at any of the local Riding for the Disabled Centres? Visit Horse SA’s website.
Check out the many opportunities for people who don’t own horses to experience horses and ponies first hand or just find out more about ways to keep in touch with horses while living in the city. Groomed coats, painted dancing hooves, tight plaited manes on arched necks.
Patent leather so shiny you can see your face, silver bits glinting in the morning sunlight, reins resting lightly over withers.
The noise of gravel under shod hooves, naughty fox terriers darting past, horse heads raised snorting in anticipation, an echo from impatient strikes of hooves waiting for evening hay, manicured gardens alongside fields of hay, old stable blocks behind grand houses.
Horses are lifestyles.
Country shows with polished ponies, racehorses returning from a morning gallop, a dressage rider in top hat and tails finetuning a pirouette, elegant side saddle ladies in their finery.
The hunt ball, lunch at the polo, fashion at the races, photos in stylish magazines or enjoying high tea whilst reminiscing with horsey friends.
For those of us who love them, horses are the thread that binds our work and play, small and large events, socials scenes and long lasting friendships.
