Tack is cleaned regularly and checked for damage – stitching, girth straps, stirrups.
The bit must also be assessed for damage as it can cause injury to the horse.
Saddles are designed so stirrup leathers can slide off the stirrup bars in the event of a fall – bars must be left open to ensure this can occur. ‘Safety Stirrups’ are used to help the rider ’s foot come out easily in the event of a fall.
Staff must lift saddles correctly and not place them above head height. 4 .
Maintenance and cleaning must be done regularly and staff must always check tack before tacking up a horse.
Tack room should be kept tidy with adequate space to move. Hazardous Materials 1 .

Injury can occur if horses kick, rear etc and horse may reverse backwards and injure anyone standing behind.
Door of trailer can fall down killing/injuring staff.
If not kept in good condition trailer can break down eg floor may collapse while in transit if left constantly wet. 2 .

Experienced staff should load/unload horses.
Horses should be acclimatised to the box before any journey takes place.
Staff should stand to the side of the box while loading.
Should be to the side of hinged door at all times.
Trailer and vehicle pulling it should be kept road worthy and checks made to ensure they are both in working order. 4 .
Following the correct procedures should eliminate most risk, always remember horses can be scared and take each loading/unloading with due attention. Vehicles Tractor and Quad bikes 1 .

Staff must receive training on how to work safely around horses and their environment.
Appropriate clothing should be worn.
Staff should be trained in carrying out duties such as grooming, tacking, leading, feeding and watering horses. 4 .
Medium To High Risk.
Training should minimise risk and staff are made aware of the dangers of working with horses.
All horses have been assessed so staff can be informed of each horses temperament. Lesson Guidance/Policy Only staff should lead horses in and out of the stables. Riders must stand behind gate while waiting to be mounted. Clients should be shown how to safely approach horses. Appropriate clothing is to be worn by riders eg hat, boots etc. Staff must check tack to ensure it is in proper working order before mounting the rider.
Special care to check girth is tightened and stirrups adjusted. If a child needs assistance to mount the horse the staff member should get permission from the parents.
All other clients must use the mounting block provided. Safety briefing is given to riders and leaders. Parents/Guardian must be shown how to hold the lead rope and how to walk beside the horse (they must not wrap rope around their hand). Gates should be shut after horses enter the arena. Riders should be taught not to ride too closely to the horse in front. Instructors must ensure that riders are able to progress at their own pace within a safe environment. At the end of lesson riders and horses must line up and face instructor. Instructor describes how to dismount and then assist the riders to leave the arena safely. Before joining any lesson new riders must be assessed Trekking Guidelines/ Policy Assessment of ability will occur before going out on a trek. Riders will be warned of the risks of riding and the correct procedure to follow if an emergency occurs. Riders will be told how to ride over various different types of terrain. Riders must be accompanied by an employee of the establishment who will lead the trek from the front. Treks with mixed ability riders will proceed at walking pace throughout the trek. On return to the enclosed arena riders who have the capability and experience will be allowed to trot. Riders participating in a trot/cantering trek will be assessed beforehand in the arena. No children under the age of five will be allowed to ride out on a trek but will be allowed to ride in the enclosed arena with an experienced staff member present Certain sections of the track have been allocated for trotting and cantering and must be adhered to by the staff Riders and horses must be kept together in one group to avoid horses falling behind and increasing their speed to catch up Staff must carry mobile phone at all times and have emergency numbers available Riders must maintain a safe distance as instructed from the electric fence In any emergency such as a loose horse on the track staff should follow safety procedures and phone member of staff
