Friday Intermediate Western Instructor: All lessons are under the supervision of Alena Meacham, Director of UConn’s Equestrian Programs.
Alena is a member of the UConn faculty with a BS in Equine Business Management from Johnson and Wales University.
She teaches UConn’s Horse Practicum lessons to students each semester and coaches the Equestrian Hunt Seat, Western, and Dressage Teams to compete in intercollegiate competitions.
Facilities: Lessons will be held in UConn’s Horsebarn Hill Arena located on Horsebarn Hill Road, Storrs, CT.
The arena measures 100’ X 200’ with a rubber footing mix, heated barn, and viewing area.
All horses come equipped with their own tack and equipment. Weather Cancellations: In case of snow cancellation the lesson will be rescheduled for the week following the session.
Riders will be notified by email or phone call.
No refunds will be given. Requirements: Riders will be required to wear long pants and hard-soled shoes with heels.
NO SNEAKERS!!! All riders will be required to wear a hard hunt cap (which will be supplied).
Riders must be able to independently tack and mount their horse.
Lessons are available for Advanced Beginner through Advanced levels.
Riders must be 12 years of age or older. Enrollment: Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis.

Make checks payable to: The University of Connecticut. Procedure: All riders should report to UConn Horse Barn for their lessons 30 minutes early to tack up and start on time.
Horses will be assigned to riders.
Riders must cool out horses, untack, and clean all equipment used.
All riders must return the signed release form prior to the first class (a guardian or parent must sign if person is under 18 years of age).

Make up lessons are at the discretion of the instructor depending on time availability, and other than cancelled lessons, they will only be granted with a legitimate excuse.

Students will work on suppleness, balance of the horse, and improving the horse’s gaits through lateral work. Intermediate- Riders must walk and trot in a group.
Riders will work on the canter, cavalletti exercises, and small jumps. Western – Riders must walk, jog, and lope in a group on intermediate level horse.
Students will work on their equitation and suppleness of the horse as well as patterns. Advanced- Riders must walk, trot and canter with or without stirrups on any horse.
They must be able to ride the horse on the bit and jump a 3 foot course of fences.
Students will work on advanced flat and jumping exercises, course work, and developing their abilities to ride and train green horses.
